The Best of West Texas

We left Marfa on a beautiful West Texas morning. Cool but not cold, slight tail wind and with a brand new road surface, rolling smooth and fast. The desert was tinged green and yellow after the rain, the sun picking out the mountains in its raking light. We glided effortlessly across the valley and over a low pass before dropping down into the town of Alpine in time for an early lunch.

The superb conditions continued after Alpine as we headed for Marathon. Small trees and green hills off into the distance, horses and cows grazing, and the ever-present railway tracks shining in the sun.

The pueblo styled RV park a little out of Marathon where we are camping is actually quite cute, as is the restored adobe town center. After a camp dinner we all headed down to the historic Gage Hotel for drinks and atmosphere. Walking back, the Milky Way hung overhead like a white arch, a shooting star left a trail across the sky, a freight train passed - its headlight picking out trees and telephone poles for a mile down the track, its sudden horn scaring the living daylights out of me.
