Moving On Towards Marfa

Today was a long day. It started with a puncture before even leaving our churchyard campground, so we were late getting on the road. Then the day's 75 mile ride alternated between actually riding on the 10 freeway or immediately adjacent to it on the "frontage road". Combined with reasonable head winds, it was slow going all day. Then we crossed into Central Time and "lost" an hour.

We started with a long climb from the Rio Grande valley up onto a desert plateau, lunch stop in the boarded up town of Sierra Blanca, then a long, long haul across the plateau, and a short downhill into Van Horn and the KOA campground. 2000 feet of climbing in all.

The advantage of riding in a group is the opportunity for drafting, and I did my fair share today. Following about 2 feet behind the rider in front, it requires concentration but cuts the wind resistance enormously and really helps with head winds on the long stretches.

Tomorrow 5 of us are splitting off from the group and going to Marfa instead of Fort Davis for our rest day on Tuesday. A mecca for contemporary art, film buffs and gliding, there's sure to be some culture and excitement. We've rented what looks to be a very luxurious vacation house so we're looking forward to a nice day off and some R&R.
