Still in Texas

The ride out of Texas couldn't have been better: warm, sunny, smooth flat road and a tail wind - we were really flying. An effortless day of 65 miles. The roadside was thick forest over wet and swampy ground.

Picture this: We're standing at a gas station talking to a lively preacher. The preacher has given an account of his life. Coming from the lowly position of an unemployed beer drinker, cigarette smoker and crackhead he found the Lord and is now blessed with 2 cars, 2 pickups, 3 sit on lawn mowers, an edge trimmer and most recently, a horse. He stands with his hands inside his dungerees, maybe in his trouser pockets but this is uncertain. His face is animated as he tells how his mama has always been there for him and how he came to start his church "The House of Prayer for all People". He confides that the first blessing he received was the curing of his syphilis, then extends his hand in a friendly gesture of parting. Question is: do you shake the preacher's hand?

Tonight we are being hosted at the museum in Merryville, just a few miles into Louisiana. Out tents are pitched on the lawn and the town hosts laid on a huge spread of gumbo, potato salad and banana pudding. Lots of local kids visited in costume and collected bags of Halloween candy. We socialized with the mayor and Felix demonstrated a special party skill (photo to follow on future blog post).
