A day off

Today is our second day off, but first day without riding (we did 30 miles on our last day off in Phoenix). This morning we had a leisurely breakfast in Silver City, which turned out to be a pleasant town then hung out at the bike shop. When Cathy mentioned that she needed to use a water basin to look for the hole in her Thermorest someone in the store said he lived nearby and just to go over to his house. Fixing the Thermorest was much easier with a full kitchen. What a cool town this is.

At lunchtime Dave, the tour leader, swung by the RV park in a rented van and we all drove up to the Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument. Dappled light splashed through autumn colors as we walked the short trail up the canyon to the cliff dwellings. Docents were on site ready to talk about how the rooms were built and point out the few remaining cave paintings. Surprisingly, the dwellings were built and inhabited only between about 1270 and 1300 AD.



Met some kiwis (from Christchurch) in the pub in the evening. They are doing the Adventure Cycling Great Divide route: a primarily off road route that follows the crest of the Rocky Mountains from Banff south to the Mexican border.
