Impending Doom

Today's ride was cold, the sun never really breaking through the clouds. With 70 miles to complete through rolling hills we pushed on, keeping the breaks short. We passed over the north end of Lake Conroe, about 60 miles north of Houston.

The talk of the day was the forecast: thunderstorms tonight, 2" of rain tomorrow with flood warnings, more heavy rain tomorrow night. With wet tents from the heavy dew last night and a rainy ride tomorrow, people were not looking forward to camping out in the state park tonight.

Various alternative scenarios were thrown out including the San Jacinto motel near the state park (which turned out to be closed due to a fire) or riding on 15 miles to the motel at Shepard (which turned out to be closed for unspecified reasons).

However we managed to secure indoor accommodations at The Lodge at the campground. On arrival we discovered "The Lodge" was not a 5 star luxury hotel but instead a one room group use space, but everyone was more than happy just to have a roof over our heads for the coming deluge. John V got a fire going and I supervised dinner (Mac and Cheese - always a camp favorite) — it was actually very comfortable. Later we had little celebration for Dolores (from Greenwich Village, New York City) who turned 67 today.

Then everyone started getting mentally prepared for what promises to be a very difficult 65 mile ride tomorrow.
